As you drive along, Waze will periodically notify you via pop-ups of incidents on the road ahead within a preset radius or along your chosen route if a destination has been set. Slow traffic, incidents and accidents, and police presence and speed cameras are among the possible triggers for notifications. That Waze will provide these notifications even if you do not have a destination chosen adds incentive to always have the app running when behind the wheel and on the road; of course, you’ll also be doing your part to improve the map and traffic data available to the whole Waze community by doing so.

Waze doesn’t just focus on driving though. Updates have added support for Google Assistant (on Android) and Siri (on iOS). You can also choose from a variety of app audio voices to guide you while you drive and even use the app’s carpool feature to arrange carpools to offer rides or find companions. Waze is free and ad-supported. It has a motorcycle mode, and you can also listen to your favorite music from apps like Spotify and podcasts by linking those services up with Waze and playing them through the app.

Waze also includes social features (connect to Facebook), game mechanics (earn points and find digital treats on the map), and a questionable Map Chat feature that lets you leave messages and photos on the map for other drivers to browse. There’s also a feature to find and report fuel prices, which can be useful but probably isn’t something you want to use while driving. In fact, generally speaking, the less that you interact with Waze while driving, the easier it is to live with.

The official Reddit app may not be the most loved app out there, but it’s gotten a lot better since launch. It’s also one of the only Reddit apps available for the iPhone. There are some advantages to going for the official app — like, for example, the fact that it’s one of the easiest to use. It doesn’t have some of the more advanced features that some readers offer, but many won’t need those advanced features, like multi-account support, anyway.

You can easily make your own post to Reddit by tapping the pencil icon on the main page. Your post can be either be text, a link (usually the most popular), or an image. You can post whatever you like, for the most part. Unlike Instagram , Reddit doesn’t offer any tools to touch up or create new images. Even Snapchat, which is more focused on sharing the moment, offers some image editing tools.

If you’re already a Reddit user, the official Reddit iPhone app probably offers a lot of what you’ve been waiting for. The interface is very clean, if sometimes confusing, and it does a great job recreating the experience of using Reddit. It’s a smart move to mobile, and one that feels just as useful as the desktop Website experience. But there’s a steep learning curve for beginners. Rather than act as an easy entry point, the Reddit app actually seems less welcoming and more confusing than the site itself.

Discord has a wide array of privacy and safety settings that allow users to control who has the ability to send them direct messages or add them as a friend. Its “Safe Direct Messaging” feature can automatically scan and delete direct messages containing explicit content (although this isn’t foolproof, and it doesn’t apply outside of DMs). Discord also lets its users decide whether the app can collect and use their data for customization or analytics purposes, which is a nice change of pace from other social apps that provide no insight or control over your data. Netflix has an extremely broad catalog of video content, but it changes all the time. Shows available one day may be gone the next. It’s difficult to state authoritatively what is in Netflix’s catalog at any given moment, but that’s all part of the fun, right?

The updated Netflix app now for Android includes support for Extended HE-AAC with MPEG-D DRC (xHE-AAC). The long and short is, those on Android 9 and above, can expect higher audio quality when the web connection allows. In a lengthy post on its tech blog, Netflix says: “Our xHE-AAC streams deliver studio-quality audio when network conditions allow, and minimise rebuffers when the network is congested.”

Venmo lets you send and request money to and from anyone who has a Venmo account. The app can help with the awkward chore of reimbursing family or friends for dinner or other outings, but it’s not made for buying or selling goods with strangers. Venmo can also be used for web purchases with certain merchants, usually on websites with a payment button similar to PayPal’s.

There’s no need to add money to your Venmo balance to start sending money. Instead, you link a bank account, credit card or debit card to your account. Money comes from your funding source, unless you have sufficient funds in your Venmo balance to cover the entire payment. You transfer money using someone’s email address or phone number. If the recipient doesn’t have a Venmo account, they’re considered a “new user.” The “new user” needs to create an account to accept the money. You can cancel the payment if the receiver doesn’t want to accept money.

Venmo offers 100% protection for unauthorized transactions with some limitations. Unauthorized transactions are characterized as transactions “that you did not authorize and that did not benefit you.” An example of this is if someone gains access to your account with your password and starts transferring funds. However, you do not qualify for protection if you willingly give someone access to your account and they make transactions without your permission.

In a recent update, Facebook removed the ability to send and receive SMS messages in the app. However, the social network makes up for that subtraction with a major makeover that gives the app a much more modern look and adds extra features, which make it better than ever.

Some useful features included in Messenger is its indicator to see when a person is typing, delivered receipts, read receipts, and a timestamp for when the message was sent, with another for when the recipient read the most recent one. Much like on Facebook, Messenger lets you react to messages on both the website and app.

Another great thing about sharing images and videos through Messenger is that the app and website collect all the media files so you can quickly sift through them. If you’re using Messenger with your Facebook account, any private Facebook message appears in it. You can delete these texts as well as archive and unarchive them to hide or unhide them from constant view.

Love it or hate it, Facebook has built a great feature set into a very well-performing app in Messenger. And combined with the crazy-big user base, it’s getting harder every day to justify not using it (or at least having it installed).
